Diggermate is a franchise business specialising in the hiring of mini excavators and other machinery across Australia and New Zealand, with over 40 franchise locations and 7 different machinery asset types.
- Once hired, machinery is moved and used in various locations making it difficult for franchisees to keep track of where their machines are at any time, meaning there is a risk of theft.
- Machinery can easily be tipped over and/or damaged if used incorrectly and the customer should be penalised, however there is no easy way to detect this unless it is visually obvious on inspection.
- Machinery is required to be regularly serviced based on engine hours to ensure it remains in good working order, however most machinery has no way of tracking its usage outside of recording it manually which is time consuming and prone to error.
- As part of the hire agreement machinery should not be used after hours, however the franchisees have no easy way of understanding when this occurs.
- The franchisor would also like to track and produce a heatmap of machine activity across the franchise network, however the only way to achieve this currently is anecdotally from franchisees, which is likely to be inaccurate.

Fleetware approached the customer with a solution to their requests.
- Our Rugged, Rugged+ or Incognito trackers were installed on all machinery to track location, movement, engine hours, and accident events. The relevant tracker was selected to match the machine’s type, usage and requirements.
- All the data was sent to Trackd, the GPS tracking platform. There, geofences were created around each franchise site location and notifications created to alert franchisees when machines exited and entered their site.
- Notifications were also created to alert franchisees when an accident or rollover event was detected, and when after-hours movement was detected on their specific machines so that they could take appropriate action.
- The Trackd reports module is used to show machine activity including engine hours, accident / rollover events, and after-hours movement.
- A report was also created to show usage by location, which was then used as a heat map for the franchisor.
The Result
The implementation of the telematics solution allowed the asset hire company to effectively protect franchisee assets from potential theft, increase asset utilisation through proactive scheduled maintenance, and gain oversight across their whole nationwide and international asset fleet.
Trackers were selected to match the specific requirements of the machine. For example, our Rugged+ with a large internal battery was used for machines that will be isolated and without power for extended periods.
Franchisees gain peace of mind by knowing they can view where their machines are at any given time and how they are being used, even while in transit on trailers.
Franchisees are immediately notified if an accident or rollover event is detected, so that they can ensure the customer is safe and that any damage to the machine can be reported and accounted for.
Engine hours are automatically accrued and stored, and the customer created automatic reminders for machine servicing at set intervals.
