DDH1 Drilling

The Problem

DDH1 Drilling is a leading provider of technically innovative drilling services to the Australian mineral exploration and mining industry. A large part of the services offered involve exploration of terrain in remote areas across Australia with little to no cellular coverage, with many of the remote areas having potential hazards from road surfaces to wildlife.

  • Workers are often driving to remote areas alone, with the only method of communication with managers or support teams as phone calls or text message using cellular. This poses a huge risk in areas where cellular coverage is not available.
  • Remote areas often have un-sealed or under-maintained roads that may prove difficult to traverse with typical on-road vehicles and may cause accident or rollover events, that would not be visible to management or support teams.
  • Workers may encounter other hazards while in remote areas, such as wildlife encounters or dangerous weather conditions where it is necessary to alert the management team urgently to request support. Before solution implementation, the customer only had a cellular based method for alerts.
  • Management teams often are unaware of the exact location of remote workers are at any given time and are also unaware when they move between certain regions and jurisdictions.
  • Management are also unaware of certain driver behaviours while driving in remote areas that may lead to accidents or rollovers, such as speeding or hard braking.

The Solution

Fleetware approached the customer with a solution to their requests.

  • Our Remote Worker trackers were installed on the customer’s exploratory light vehicles, light trucks, and buses to track their location, speed, and accelerometer information.
  • An Iridium Edge module was used in conjunction with the tracker to provide satellite connectivity when outside of cellular coverage. The Iridium satellite connection would send tracking data at a reduced rate to save on costs, but would immediately transmit data when an accident, rollover or panic button event was triggered.
  • A standard momentary switch was used as a panic button, which is required to be held in the “ON” position for 3 seconds to trigger an immediate alert to the management team.
  • The Remote Worker tracker’s in-built accelerometer is used to detect high G-force events which indicate an impact accident or vehicle rollover triggering an immediate alert to the management team.
  • All the data was sent to Trackd, the GPS tracking platform. There, geofences were created to contain key regions and customer sites. Events were then recorded when vehicles entered and exited these geofence locations for reporting purposes.
  • The Trackd reports module is used to show worker driver behaviour including maximum and average speed, mileage, engine hours and a ranking based on Trackd’s Eco Driving parameters.

The Result

The implementation of the telematics solution allowed the drilling and exploration company to accurately track the location of workers in remote locations, and receive immediate notifications when accident, rollover or panic button events occurred significantly enhancing their safety procedures.

Out-Of-Cellular Connectivity

The use of satellite connectivity when outside of cellular coverage, means management never lose sight of their workers.

Immediate Notifications

Management receives immediate notifications when a critical event is triggered, such as an accident, rollover, or panic button so that they can take appropriate action.

Time Savings & Peace Of Mind

Management is no longer required to regularly call workers to confirm their location and safety, as data is collected automatically and available to view at any time in the Trackd platform.
