On-site Pedestrian Safety with AI Pedestrian Detection System

Real-time pedestrian detection and object avoidance

Keeping pedestrians safe around mobile plant and material handling equipment is one of the biggest challenges in industrial environments. Fleetware’s Pedestrian Detection Camera System is designed to significantly reduce collision risk by actively detecting people and objects in close proximity to forklifts, reach stackers and other material handling equipment.

This intelligent, multi-sensor solution provides real-time alerts to operators while delivering powerful visibility to management through Fleetware’s cloud platform.

It’s all about safety…

The pedestrian detection system combines AI-powered camera technology, radar sensing and GPS tracking to create a comprehensive safety and asset management solution.

How it Works

Pedestrian detection

Advanced vision technology detects pedestrians entering defined danger zones and blind spots around the asset and provides instant in-cabin alerts to the operator.

Object and collision avoidance

Integrated radar sensors identify objects in the vehicle’s path, helping improve worker safety and prevent collisions in low-visibility or high-traffic environments.

Real-time in-cabin alerts

Visual and audible warnings notify operators immediately when a pedestrian or object is detected in blind spots or too close to the machine.

GPS tracking and asset visibility

Built-in GPS tracks asset location, movement and utilisation, giving you clear insight into how and where equipment is being used.

A smarter approach to safety

Fleetware’s Pedestrian Detection System doesn’t just react to incidents — it helps prevent them. By combining intelligent detection, real-time alerts and cloud-based insights, it delivers a proactive safety solution that protects people, assets and operations.

Pedestrian Detection System

Has Extensive Capabilities

These are just some of the benefits that will apply to your fleet of machines. Our telematics platform, Trackd, is extremely flexible, which allows us to develop solutions to meet our customers’ requirements with ease.

Front and rear BSD cameras continuously monitor for pedestrians and trigger clear, immediate alerts to help operators react sooner. Detection supports people moving around the machine as well as those entering higher-risk areas inside warehouses and on outdoor worksites, helping reduce near-misses and improve overall site safety.*

*Unfortunately, we will not be able to set up geofences where pedestrians won’t be detected by the BSD solution.

Event-based footage is automatically captured and uploaded to the telematics platform, so supervisors can review incidents without chasing manual downloads. This makes it easier to verify what happened, support coaching conversations, and keep a reliable video record for audits, investigations, or continuous improvement.

Expand visibility by adding extra cameras to the MDVR, providing improved coverage around the machine and in blind-spot areas. Additional angles support safer manoeuvring during tight operations and deliver more complete footage after an event, giving your team the context they need to respond quickly and confidently.

Customise how the system responds by setting different outcomes for different alarm levels, based on your site’s risk profile and workflows. Configure graduated alerts – from early warnings through to higher-priority alarms – so operators receive the right level of notification at the right time, without unnecessary disruption.

Integrated driver ID enables operators to tag on to each machine using driver ID cards at startup, helping ensure accountability and traceability. This links events, footage, and operating behaviour to the correct driver, supporting safer operations, clearer reporting, and more effective training and compliance processes.

Receive notifications when machines exceed configured speed limits while operating outdoors, helping enforce safe driving practices and reduce incident risk. Speed alerts can be used to identify trends, support targeted coaching, and demonstrate compliance with site safety expectations.

Create geofences to track time spent in defined zones, monitor no-go areas, and set location-based speeding zones for better control of site movements. Geofence speeding operates when the machine is outside, giving you added oversight across yards, external work areas, and shared access routes.

Generate reports on idling and run hours to understand operating patterns better and reduce wasted time and fuel. Run hours can also be uploaded automatically to Mainpac to streamline servicing and maintenance scheduling, helping minimise downtime and keep assets operating reliably.

Utilisation reporting highlights over- and under-used machines so you can optimise fleet deployment and plan resourcing more effectively. These insights can support decisions on shift allocation, maintenance planning, and future fleet investment – ensuring equipment is used where it delivers the most value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the system automatically slow down or stop the machine when a pedestrian is detected?

The Fleetware PDS is designed as a high-performance driver assistance aid that provides real-time visual and audible alerts to the operator. It does not currently integrate with the machine’s braking or throttle systems to automatically slow or stop the vehicle. This ensures the operator remains in full control of the machine while being empowered with superior situational awareness to prevent incidents.

How are the detection zones (Green, Yellow, Red) determined?

Detection zones are fully configurable to align with your specific site safety policies and risk assessments. During installation, our technicians work with you to define the distance and shape of each zone (such as semi-circles for wide-area detection or rectangles for narrow aisles). This flexibility ensures the system provides meaningful alerts that match your unique operational environment.

Does the system use facial recognition or capture biometric data?

No. The AI technology is specifically trained to detect “person-shaped” objects to identify pedestrians in danger zones. It does not perform facial recognition, identity verification, or any form of biometric profiling. This approach ensures high-speed detection and safety performance while maintaining the privacy of your workforce.

How is video footage managed and stored?

The on-vehicle DVR records continuous video to a local industrial-grade SSD, typically retaining up to 30 days of footage on a rolling loop. To save data and simplify management, only video clips associated with specific AI-detected “events” are uploaded to the Fleetware cloud platform. This allows management to quickly review critical safety incidents without having to sift through hours of routine footage.

Can the system distinguish between a person and a static object like a bollard or pallet?

Yes. Unlike traditional proximity sensors or radar-only systems that may alert on every object, our AI-powered cameras are specifically tuned to identify pedestrians. While integrated radar can be used for general object avoidance, the AI component significantly reduces “nuisance alarms” by distinguishing human movement from static infrastructure, allowing operators to focus on genuine safety risks.
