At Fleetware, we think it’s important to play our part in the global effort to increase equality and the quality of life for the millions of people that are much less fortunate than us. So, every month, we set aside a percentage of our subscription income to be donated to a variety of different causes.

We use an organisation called B1G1 who ensures that 100% of our giving goes towards the causes of our choice.

In May we supplied:

  • 3 years of access to safe and hygienic toilets for students in Tanzania
  • A toilet to an underprivileged family in India
  • 3 years of access to a toilet for women and girls in Cambodia

This month, we decided to focus on sanitation. Safe and hygienic toilets are something that we take for granted here in Australia, yet, millions of people around the world go without this basic amenity.

Improving Sanitation

In Tanzania, less than a tenth of the rural population have access to adequate sanitation – a leading cause of preventable diseases, such as diarrhoea and cholera. Constructing safe and hygienic toilets in schools promotes safe sanitation practices amongst students and teachers, not to mention improving attendance with decreased illness. Each facility is customised and designed by engineers – with treated biosolids able to be safely removed and reused for agricultural practices! Students and teachers then learn how to use and maintain the facilities, ensuring the durability of these for years to come.

In Cambodia, many villages still practise outdoor defecation, which also leads to increases in diarrhoea, skin disease, respiratory illnesses, and other waterborne diseases – not to mention the safety issue of this practise. Many women and girls feel afraid to enter the fields at night due to fear of being assaulted, simply trying to go to the toilet. Although building latrines might be a less glorious project, it’s an important service that helps to advance the health of rural communities whilst restoring dignity and safety to women and girls.

Installing Household Toilets

In India, one sanitary unit can serve a family household for 20 to 30 years with regular repair and maintenance. One toilet takes around 20 days to build, but its impact on the everyday lives of families is paramount. Providing poverty-stricken families with a toilet puts an end to open defecation and provides them with dignity, safety, and an improved quality of life. Simply installing a household toilet means that waterborne diseases are avoided, and women and girls can feel safe and secure in the privacy of their own home.

We thank all our customers for continuing their support for Fleetware and our giving efforts, helping us to build a better world, one toilet at a time.
