At Fleetware, we think it’s important to play our part in the global effort to increase equality and the quality of life for the millions of people who are much less fortunate than us. So, every month, we set aside a percentage of our subscription income to be donated to various causes.
We use an organisation called B1G1 which ensures that 100% of our giving goes towards the causes of our choice. This month, our focus was providing bathrooms and clean sanitation to those who need it most.
So, in August we supplied:
- 9 months of access to a bathroom for a family in India
- 3 years of improved sanitation for a school in Tanzania
- 3 years of access to a latrine for a community in Cambodia
Bringing Bathrooms to Families in India
Families in rural India are provided with all the essential materials, from steel and cement to doors, to construct proper household toilets and showers. Having clean sanitation facilities isn’t just about comfort; it reduces the risk of disease, improves health, and helps communities break the cycle of poverty. Once the facilities are in place, villagers are also supported with practical guidance on hygiene and how to manage the amenities to keep them sustainable.
This project works with entire villages in Odisha, focusing on tribal and marginalised communities, and ensures everyone takes part – from contributing local materials and labour to forming a community committee to oversee the project. This hands-on approach means that once the facilities and water supply are set up, the village itself takes responsibility for maintaining them, creating lasting impacts for every family involved.
Safe and Hygienic School Latrines in Tanzania
Schools in rural Tanzania are gaining access to safe and hygienic latrines, thoughtfully designed and constructed by top engineers. These facilities not only provide a clean and secure environment for students and teachers, but also allow for treated biosolids to be safely removed and reused in agriculture. Alongside construction, students and teachers are taught how to use and maintain the facilities, ensuring they remain durable and effective over time. Poor sanitation is a major contributor to diarrhoea and other diseases, yet fewer than one in ten rural Tanzanians have access to improved sanitation.
Thanks to this project, eight new school sanitation facilities have been built, and two existing blocks rehabilitated, benefitting approximately 6,500 children across ten primary schools and promoting safe hygiene practices that can last a lifetime.
Improving Sanitation for Cambodian Communities
While latrines might not be the flashiest projects, they are among the most important for improving health and safety in rural communities. In many Cambodian villages, outdoor defecation is still common, increasing the risk of diarrhoea, skin infections, respiratory illnesses, and other waterborne diseases. It also creates serious safety concerns, particularly for women and young girls, who often fear going into the fields at night. Having a latrine within the safety of their home compound brings dignity, better health, and security.
This project aligns with the global WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) strategy, which focuses on improving health, life expectancy, education, and gender equality through access to clean water and sanitation. Rather than giving facilities for free, villagers contribute financially and with labour, fostering ownership and ensuring long-term success. Each latrine includes concrete tanks, PVC piping, and porcelain toilets, with villagers contributing $12.50. They then receive $7.50 back after building the walls and roof, with the remaining $5 going into a village fund, creating a sustainable model that benefits the whole community.
